Who are we?
The two founders of this travel blog are globetrotters Hanno Weima and Dick van Voorthuizen. They introduce themselves below.
Dick van Voorthuizen
Dick (1961) has already gone silver-haired. Not from travelling by the way, because that’s his passion. Since the late 1980s, he and his wife Marguerite have been globetrotting. His most extraordinary trip was, long before the Internet existed, a trip from China to Pakistan. After the birth of his children, he mostly saw Europe. By travelling around with their own motorhome, they also covered some beautiful destinations.
In 2017, he had a sabbatical leave, as his work as an independent consultant was too unsatisfactory. Together with Marguerite he travelled for almost 8 months through South America and Southeast Asia. During the preparation for that trip, the idea of Silver Travellers also came into being. He found a lot of information on the Internet, but this was mainly aimed at young backpackers. For the target group of people active in their fifties, with a different information need, very little was easy to find in one place. As the trip progressed, he became increasingly aware that Silver Travellers could meet the needs of active over-50s preparing for a beautiful journey.
Hanno Weima
Hanno (1970) was already smitten with the travel bug at a young age by his parents. After visiting many beautiful countries in Europe, at the age of 20 he first became acquainted with a non-western culture during his internship in the exotic Mauritius. From the age of 27 until his 29th birthday, Hanno lived and worked on sunny Curaçao. It was here that he got to know his wife Mirjam, who was enjoying a holiday on the island.
Since then, the couple has been exploring the whole world and every year tick a few countries off their wish list. In addition to travelling and blogging, Hanno is an avid diver, a hobby that can be combined with trips to beautiful tropical destinations. On this website, therefore, there is also attention given to exotic, distant dive destinations, including some in Micronesia and Polynesia. The most recent trips were to the Philippines, Hawaii, Myanmar and New Zealand. In October 2018, the couple set foot for the first time on the third largest island in the world – New Guinea.
