As a region, Southeast Asia is an important tourist destination for all ages. The region also has so much to offer: countless beautiful temples, lovely bounty beaches, many jungles where you can go on special treks, incredibly good food, beautiful markets and the chance to meet various ethnic groups. The population is generally very friendly and helpful. You can travel around for months on very little money and stay in comfortable hotels. The region includes (in alphabetical order) the following countries: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (formerly Burma), the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. You will find detailed information about the countries we have recently visited on the website.

Cambodia

The main attraction of Cambodia is of course Angkor Wat. This beautiful temple complex is a bucket list destination! The nature is beautiful and there are affordable, splendid beaches to be explored. A visit to the killing fields is also a (poignant) must!

Indonesia

Indonesia is an archipelago consisting of over 14,500 islands located on and around the equator in Southeast Asia. For us, Indonesia is one of the most attractive countries in the world to visit because of its particularly high biodiversity as well as its diversity in culture and landscape…

Laos

Laos is a beautiful country, with laid-back people. It is much less crowded than Thailand, Cambodia or Vietnam, yet has a lot to offer. Our highlight of Laos: a three-day zipline trip on the Gibbon Experience in the jungle.

Malaysia

Malaysia has a lot to offer travellers. One of the highlights is literally experiencing the sunrise on Mount Kinabalu, one of the highest mountains in Southeast Asia. The Semporna Archipelago is a paradise for divers. On the Cameron Highlands, you will find a lot of…

Myanmar

Myanmar (also known as Burma) is a paradise for travellers. We found the visit to Myanmar the highlight of our journey through Southeast Asia. That was most definitely thanks to the very friendly people. An absolute highlight is a hot air balloon trip over Bagan…

Vietnam

Vietnam is well loved by travellers, and rightly so! It took us almost 6 weeks in 2017 to travel from north to south. In the capital, Hanoi, you’ll be surprised by the traffic and what everyone tries to carry on a moped.

Thailand

Thailand

Thailand in a nutshell Approximately 40 million tourists visit Thailand every year, making the kingdom the most visited country in Southeast Asia. Not entirely unjustified, we think. Here, you will find almost everything an active...

Laos

Laos is a country that is not so well known or visited in Southeast Asia. We think that should not be the case. No, you will not find large temple cities from antiquity or very special cultural sights, but Laos has a lot of beauty to show off! First of all, the...

Climate

Southeast Asia is a large area with a generally tropical climate. The north of the region has a monsoon climate with wet and dry seasons. The south and east (especially the Sunda Islands and the Philippines) have a rainforest climate, in which a lot of rainfall can fall all year round. Most countries in Southeast Asia get a lot of rain from May to mid-October. In the winter months, it is fantastic to travel, although it can get quite cold in the interior of Vietnam and Laos for example.

Travelling within the region

Southeast Asia is a vast area. The plane is therefore the most suitable means to cover large distances. Important hubs in the region are Bangkok, Singapore, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city (also known as Saigon) and Kuala Lumpur. The destinations can generally be flown to directly or with a short transfer. To reach other countries and places, you can book various flights at reasonable prices. There are many small airlines with which you can fly from Thailand to Yangon in Myanmar for very little. One of the larger airlines in this region is Air Asia. They fly to and from almost every country and big city. Often for less than €25 one way.

There are also several bus companies that offer long distance buses from Vietnam to Cambodia. These are often night buses. Although the buses are equipped with sleeping beds, it is not a comfortable journey. The beds are too small for the average Dutchman and the buses are often so full that there are also people in the aisle. Because of the poor road conditions, a bus ride can be a long trip. So, travelling by plane, though that little bit more expensive, is really recommended.

Healthcare

Vaccinations are required for the vast majority of destinations in Southeast Asia. Malaria also occurs in many areas and you may need to take medication. In the detailed descriptions for the countries in Southeast Asia, you will find all the necessary information.

Personal travel advice

This region is ideal for a longer trip. There are so many beautiful things to see or do that a three-week holiday is actually (much) too short. Depending on your interests, available time and period of the year, you can go on a fantastic tour throughout one or more countries in Southeast Asia.
