Wine paradise in the heart of France

Burgundy is renowned as one of France’s most prestigious wine regions. Autumn buzzes with wine festivities. A highlight is the annual wine auction at the historic Hospices de Beaune. A unique way to explore this region is by boat along or cycling beside the Burgundy Canal. You’ll pass through the most charming, picturesque villages. Vineyards and forests adorn themselves in spectacular autumn hues. Your journey ends in the beautiful Dijon, where you can enjoy medieval architecture, famous mustard, and a lively covered market.

Croatian coastal gem

Dubrovnik, located in southern Croatia, is the country’s most visited city for good reason. This pearl on the Adriatic Sea is one of the few fully walled cities still in existence. A walk through the city takes you back in time. Dubrovnik deserves a place on everyone’s wish list, not only for its numerous historical sights but also for its unique seaside location and pleasant climate. After exploring the city’s attractions, it’s certainly worth discovering Dubrovnik’s surroundings. The idyllic island of Lokrum is just a 15-minute boat ride away, and a stopover in Cavtat on the way to the airport is well worth it.

Islands of eternal spring

The Canary Islands offer a particularly pleasant climate in the autumn months. Sunshine and agreeable warmth prevail, without stifling heat. Each island invites you to embark on beautiful treks. The sea water now reaches its peak temperature, while the sun still shines for six to eight hours daily. This creates ideal conditions for beach fun not far from home. Moreover, the flora awakens after the summer drought. Combined with the impressive volcanic landscape, this ensures an unforgettable walking experience. Islands such as La Palma, Gran Canaria or Lanzarote are particularly suitable for this.

Northern Portugal

The Portuguese metropolis of Porto, situated on the Douro, attracts numerous city explorers, gourmets and culture lovers. They are enchanted by the splendid old centre, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the labyrinth of narrow, winding streets, you’ll discover centuries-old buildings that testify to a rich past. Although rain showers are more frequent in autumn than in summer, a visit to the ‘city of six bridges’ is certainly worthwhile! Combine your city trip with an excursion to the Douro Valley, cradle of the famous port wines. This UNESCO-protected area impresses with steep vineyard terraces, breathtaking vistas and the meandering Douro. During the grape harvest in autumn, there’s an infectious bustle.

Exploring Central America

The Maya Route is one of the most beloved travel routes in Central America. You’ll cross several countries with breathtaking landscapes. Many travellers start their adventure in Cancun, Mexico. West of this resort town, you’ll find the well-preserved Ek Balam. Further west lies Chichen Itza, the most visited ancient Maya site. This archaeological gem has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1988 and is now also considered one of the new seven wonders of the world. The route then leads via Merida to the ancient Maya cities of Uxmal and Palenque, before entering Guatemala. Along the way, you’ll be treated to numerous architectural masterpieces from the Maya civilisation. Be sure to wait until at least late October / early November before doing the route. This is due to the hurricane season that Central America experiences until late September / early October.

Thai tropical paradise

When autumn sets in for us, the dry season begins in Southwest Thailand. You can then count on sunny days with minimal chance of precipitation. Perfect conditions, therefore, to explore the beautiful beaches of Phuket, Krabi and the Phi Phi Islands. Or to visit the impressive Khao Sok National Park. An added advantage is the absence of large tourist crowds, allowing you to enjoy the natural beauty and cultural highlights in peace. Moreover, nature shows itself at its most beautiful after the rainy season, with powerful waterfalls, bright green rice fields and lush blooming vegetation.
