The northeastern part of Austria, bordering Germany and the Czech Republic, is called Upper Austria. The state of Upper Austria is composed of several regions. In a series of four blogs, we take you to the Danube region and the regions of Mühlviertel, Pyhrn-Priel, and Vitalwelt. Each of them has a unique character and distinct attractions. We conclude this blog with a visit to Linz, the beautiful capital of the state.
Various regions in Upper Austria for an active holiday
The Danube region lies between the German city of Passau and the town of St. Nikola. Here, you’ll find the ‘Donauradweg’, one of the most popular cycling routes in Europe. It’s a stunning route along a beautiful river. Along the Danube, there are several interesting places to visit.
To the northeast of Linz lies the Mühlviertel region. Here, it’s not the Danube that dominates but the green hills. Agriculture, with special emphasis on herbs and hops, is practiced here. Freistadt is the economic center of the region, a beautiful town with a unique center.
The Pyhrn-Priel region is located in the south of Upper Austria and is characterized, among other things, by the higher mountains found there. It’s a delightful area for skiing, cycling, or hiking.
Vitalwelt is characterized by a more hilly environment and is located southwest of Linz. As the name suggests, you can work on your vitality here. There are wellness and relaxation centers with thermal baths. For a more active approach, it’s a great place for cycling.
